Description
The Blue Egg Gene Test helps breeders identify whether a bird carries the Oocyan (O) allele, the genetic factor associated with blue or blue-green eggshell pigmentation.
This test is designed for breeders who want more precise genetic information when planning pairings, confirming blue egg genetics, or understanding whether a bird may pass the blue egg trait to future offspring.
The blue egg trait is associated with an autosomal dominant allele, meaning that a single copy of the gene may be enough for the trait to be expressed. Birds carrying the O allele may produce blue or green eggs, depending on the presence of other genes that also influence eggshell color.
Possible Results
- O/O – Homozygous Blue
- O/o – Heterozygous Blue
- o/o – Non-Blue Egg Layer
This Test May Help Confirm
- The presence or absence of the Oocyan (O) allele
- Whether a bird carries one or two copies of the allele
- Genetic support for blue or green eggshell color
- Breeding decisions related to blue egg traits
This Test Does Not Confirm
- Brown eggshell genes
- The exact shade of the egg, including blue, green, olive, or tinted variations
- Bloom, speckling, or cuticle thickness traits
- Other eggshell color modifiers unrelated to the Oocyan allele
After purchasing the test, customers must enter their sample information through the Customer Portal, create a batch, generate a Batch Slip, label each sample, and mail the samples to the laboratory. Once testing is complete, results will be available through the customer dashboard.
Sample Type
A dried blood sample collected on the tip of a clean coffee filter or on a small piece of plain printer paper is recommended.
Please visit our Sample Collection page for step-by-step instructions before mailing your samples.
Turnaround Time
Testing begins after the samples are received and logged by the laboratory.
Customers will receive updates through the Customer Portal and/or by email when the samples are received and when the results are ready.
